How to deal with imposter syndrome

I’m reading and hearing more and more people stating they’re feeling like an imposter or doubting their own abilities.

Why is this?

Is it due to the pressures individuals have been under during the last 18 months? Or is it because there is such a fixation on being perfect all the time? How we look, act, and deliver within our roles are constantly measured.

When did it become necessary to be a constant superhero at work? Previously it was on the odd occasion we claimed the superhero status, but now it’s become the norm. For individuals, this constant pressure of over delivering cannot be maintained. We are human – and burnout is a real possibility.

Has this led to the imposter syndrome becoming part of our make-up over time?

Unfortunately I don’t have a magic answer as to how an individual can cease to feel like this. But I can suggest the following:

  • Focus on you and what you have achieved. Write it down and shout about it
  • Take stock of what you’re trying to juggle. Is it manageable, or do you need to ask for help?
  • Recognise you can’t be a superhero all the time, but you can be the person you are
  • You’re human. You’re not a robot who’s programmed to constantly churn out work
  • Value you as you. Take time out to appreciate you – be it having your nails done or having a professional barber experience. Feel good about you and I promise, the imposter syndrome will start to shrink
  • Talk, talk, and talk. Reach out to someone you trust – tell them how you’re feeling and why
  • Finally, remember how can you be an imposter if you are you!

And as if the above wasn’t enough to deal with, you may also be striving to be a superhero in your personal life too…

So what does this have to do with HR?

Everything. HR is not just policies and processes – it’s also making sure your employees’ well-being is at the forefront of your duty of care.
