Procrastination

So here we are two month’s into the New Year! Hard to remember the Christmas celebrations but it was so wonderful to be able to meet up with family and friends this year – a small feeling of normality for us all.

As I sit here procrastinating about completing my monthly accounts, I started thinking about motivation and the fact that we’re all different in what drives us.

I’ve pulled together 3 easy steps of how we can help ourselves to undertake those tasks we dislike doing.

Some of us prefer to ‘eat the frog’ as a previous boss used to say – tackle the task you least want to do first – there is even a book to cover the subject! Others prefer to leave everything to the last minute and literally by the skin of their teeth meet a deadline. Not for me – way too stressful!

Or, for many of us, it’s  a case of building up to complete the task. The item keeps going on my to-do list, and each time I write a new list – there it is again, repeatedly, until it’s literally the last thing on the list, or I get to the point of just do it (sorry NIKE)!

How can we help ourselves to undertake those tasks we dislike doing?

Well first things first – look after you. Sleep, eat healthy and get out in the fresh air – all crucially  important to ensure the body and brain is motivated and looked after properly. If you’re tired or stuck indoors all the time, how can you expect to have enough energy to drive you?

Next, it’s important to find the time. Try setting aside time in your diary for those tasks you struggle with. It doesn’t have to be long – 10 minutes a day for a week would cut a deep hole in your to-do list, as long as you stick with it!

Finally, it’s acknowledging that you’ve done the work, register how it makes you feel, hopefully overcome with pride and satisfaction that you have done it, it’s now removed from your to-do list – yippee.

However, despite all this, the cycle will start again – after all we are human and procrastinating is a skill we have in abundance, but as previously mentioned JUST DO IT (sorry again NIKE!).
