Why HR?
I first moved into HR following a brief stint as a PA. I realised the HR profession was my passion when I recognised, I could indulge my secret pleasure – being curious and acting as a Private Investigator – skills that are not usually listed for HR!
HR skills
By being curious, you listen to what people are saying and can interpret their needs – great skills when aligning HR within a business and its goals. Private Investigator – well unfortunately it is a natural trait for all humans to only tell their interpretation of any event. So, you need these skills to pick up when something is not sounding quite right, or there are changes to written or verbal statements. You can then ask the relevant questions to gain a fuller understanding of what has occurred. Also, a great skill during weekly meetings, when you are trying to work out who ate the last biscuit!
History and current
I have worked in the HR industry for over 20 years, and take great pride making sure I strike the right balance for the business to achieve its goals and requirements, and at the same time making sure employees feel they’re an important part of the organisation. The result ensures the company’s employee brand is strong and employee relations are supported.
On a serious note, HR is not for everyone, but I love it. It allows me to pursue my interest in law, find solutions that fit both the company and the individual’s needs, work with people, bring to the forefront my organisational skills and my flair for building relationships.
